Assistant Professor
Himani Chandel is an Assistant Professor at the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Shoolini University. She also serves as the Senior Education Officer at the Centre for Science, Learning and Creativity (CSLC) — a joint initiative of the Himachal Pradesh government and Shoolini University.
She holds a PhD and MSc in Microbiology from Shoolini University. Her doctoral research focused on the use of bacteria and novel enzymes for treating distillery wastewater, while her MSc work explored the role of biofilms in wastewater treatment. She earned her BSc in Biotechnology from Chandigarh University, where she investigated salt-loving bacteria with potential environmental applications.
Her research interests span environmental microbiology, microbial enzymes, bioremediation, and wastewater treatment. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and contributed reviews, book chapters, and novel microbial genome sequences to NCBI. She is also the author of a book on hydrocarbon-degrading halophilic bacteria.
Asst Prof Himani Chandel received the MASTD–Louis Pasteur Award and was named among the top 30 women in India for the prestigious #SheLeadsHere Women in Water STEM Mentorship Program, supported by the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and the Consulate General of Canada.
She is an active member of several national and international microbiological societies, including MASTD (India), the International Society for Development and Sustainability (Japan), and the Microbiology Society (London). She also contributes as a peer reviewer for leading journals such as PLOS Water and Frontiers in Microbiology.
In addition to her research and academic work, she is engaged in scientific communication, student mentoring, and curriculum development, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability and applied biotechnology.
