The School of Media and Communications at Shoolini University hosted a guest lecture by Shubh Rana, Assistant Producer at BBC News Hindi. An alumna of the School, Ms Rana spoke to students about reporting, anchoring and documentary filmmaking.
Ms Rana discussed journalistic ethics and responsible communication. She said journalism went beyond gathering information and required journalists to understand different perspectives, earn trust and maintain professional relationships with sources and members of the public.
While discussing news anchoring, she identified confidence, communication skills, body language and audience connection as key elements of effective presentation. Using examples from her career, she explained how anchors could communicate information clearly, maintain credibility and hold viewers’ attention.
Ms Rana also introduced students to documentary formats, shot types, B-roll, montage and other elements of visual storytelling. She asked them to develop documentary ideas and present one- to two-minute synopses, allowing them to apply what they had learnt during the lecture.
She encouraged aspiring media professionals to strengthen their communication skills, build their knowledge and keep learning as the industry changed. She also asked them to approach their work with responsibility and professionalism.
Prof Nishtha Anand, Dean, Faculty of Media and Liberal Arts, said sessions led by alumni working in the industry helped students connect classroom learning with work in journalism and media production.
