Students of the School of Law, Shoolini University, observed the justice delivery system during an educational visit to the Lok Adalat at the District Court, Solan, on September 12. The Legal Aid Clinic organised the visit to give students practical insight into alternative dispute resolution and dispute settlement through mutual consent.
The visit connected classroom learning with courtroom practice, allowing students to observe how Lok Adalats facilitate speedy, amicable, and cost-effective dispute resolution. They watched the settlement process and learnt about the judicial and procedural aspects of resolving cases through compromise.
The students attended proceedings involving property and partition disputes, family and matrimonial matters, motor accident compensation claims, money recovery cases, bank and loan matters, compoundable criminal cases and other civil disputes.
They observed proceedings before Abhay Mandiyal, Additional District and Sessions Judge-I; Divya Jyoti Patial, Civil Judge-cum-Chief Judicial Magistrate; Vivek Khanal, Additional District and Sessions Judge-II; Nikita Tahim, Judicial Magistrate First Class; and Sharad Kumar, District and Sessions Judge. The students learnt about the roles of judges and advocates in facilitating settlements, recording statements and helping parties reach mutually acceptable resolutions.
Vineet Kumar, Coordinator, Legal Aid Clinic, coordinated the visit. Dr Ritu Panta and Nidhi Singh, Assistant Professors at the School of Law, accompanied the students.
The Legal Aid Clinic thanked Prof PK Khosla, Chancellor, Shoolini University; Prof Atul Khosla, Vice Chancellor; Prof Kamal Jeet Singh, Dean, School of Law; and Prof Renu Pal Sood for supporting activities related to legal awareness, community engagement and socially relevant legal education.
Prof Kamal Jeet Singh said the visit gave students a meaningful “Classroom to Courtroom” experience and showed them that legal practice extends beyond knowledge of statutes and procedures. He added that observing actual proceedings helped future legal professionals understand the importance of negotiation, conciliation, empathy and responsible participation in the justice delivery process.
