Sustainability Takes Centre Stage at ‘Mela with a Twist’

Shoolini University recently hosted a vibrant and eco-friendly event, ‘Mela with a Twist,’ on August 23. Transforming the badminton court into a lively hub of sustainability and fun, the event embraced the theme ‘Reduce, Reuse, Rejoice,’ promoting environmental awareness while celebrating local culture and creativity.

The evening started with a warm welcome from Shoolini Founder Chancellor Prof PK Khosla, joined by Chief Learning Officer Dr Ashoo Khosla and Director of Sustainability and Social Impact Poonam Nanda.

Visitors explored a variety of stalls showcasing innovative and sustainable products. Shoolinians enjoyed local snacks at the ‘Chaat Stalls’ and picked up eco-friendly tote bags made from reused materials, along with handmade bracelets and playful stickers. The culinary delights had a diverse menu, including waffles, dosa, kulcha, and siddu, offering something for every palate.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, Shoolini’s talented artists provided a lively soundtrack while students danced, laughed, and formed new connections, fostering a strong sense of community.

The Genomage Club made a significant impact by introducing sustainability initiatives such as a Carbon Footprint Tracker, accessible via QR code, allowing participants to calculate their environmental impact. They also hosted a quiz titled ‘Earthwise: How Sustainable Are You?’ to educate attendees on sustainable practices and presented the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging discussions on contributing to these global objectives.

The NSS Unit enhanced the event’s visual appeal with decorations made from repurposed materials, including old posters and pictures. Their commitment to sustainability was evident in their use of recycled paper and plans for future recycling, ensuring that the event was as eco-friendly as possible.

Meanwhile, the Lit-witz Club creatively crafted props from discarded cardboard and newspapers. They reused an old fishbowl for fortune-telling and made bookmarks from recycled paper, emphasising their dedication to sustainability by avoiding plastic and using digital branding.

‘Mela with a Twist’ was more than just an event — it celebrated community, creativity, and sustainability. Through a mix of food, music, and educational activities, Shoolini University created an engaging environment where students could enjoy themselves while learning about the importance of environmental stewardship. The evening left everyone with smiles, satisfied appetites, and a renewed commitment to eco-friendly practices, demonstrating that sustainability can be both fun and educational.
