In a move to empower researchers and scholars, Shoolini University organised an enlightening session titled ‘Academic Publishing with Springer‘ on August 20. The event featured Satvinder Kaur, a Senior Editor (Books) at Springer Nature Group, New Delhi, who shared her extensive knowledge of academic publishing.Â
With over a decade of experience, Satvinder Kaur discussed the crucial role of research publications in academia. She outlined the key factors publishers consider when evaluating research work and deciding its suitability for publication.
Kaur pointed out that the ‘Results’ and ‘Discussion’ sections are often the most scrutinised parts of a research article. She stressed the need to ensure that research findings were relevant to the field and that any discoveries or insights were substantial enough to merit publication.Â
During her talk, Kaur also clarified the differences between books and research papers. She explained that books generally ranged from 200 to 250 pages, while research papers were typically more concise. Using examples of various book formats, including monographs, epilogues, and autobiographies, Kaur answered audience questions and explained the specific criteria and writing techniques for different types of publications.
Recognising the academic nature of the audience, the Senior Editor (Books) highlighted the potential for scholars to publish their theses as monographs, noting that the length of the book might vary depending on the number of contributors.
She also explored the ethical considerations of publishing, discussing the importance of maintaining the authenticity of work and identifying unethical practices. Additionally, she provided general guidance on topics like Open Access and Creative Commons 4.0.Â
Kaur stressed the importance of understanding the target audience when writing and publishing. She advised that selecting a trusted publisher is critical, as it ensures that the research reaches the appropriate readership.
In light of the growing influence of artificial intelligence, Kaur cautioned against relying too heavily on AI in academic work. She stated, “AI can be used, but the human touch is needed,” emphasising the importance of human involvement in research and publishing.Â
The highly interactive session allowed participants to ask questions and clear their doubts. Both scholars and aspiring authors found the talk informative, gaining a better understanding of the publication process.
Shoolini University’s dedication to cultivating academic excellence and promoting ethical publishing practices was evident through this insightful event. By hosting such sessions, the university continues to empower its researchers and scholars, ensuring that their work reaches a broader audience and contributes to advancing knowledge and research integrity.Â
