Between Thought & Expression: Tenzin Tsundue on Art of Writing

What does it mean to find your voice — and why does it matter? That question sat at the heart of a compelling interactive session hosted by the School of Media and Communications and the Chitrakoot School of Liberal Arts at Shoolini University, featuring Tibetan writer and activist Tenzin Tsundue.

Tsundue, whose own writing has been shaped by exile, resistance, and the search for identity, took students on a journey through the philosophy and purpose of creative expression. Writing, he explained, is not merely a skill but an internal evolution — from observation to perception, from perspective to voice. “Understanding why you write”, he told participants, “is central to the creative journey itself”.

The session challenged students to think of storytelling not just as communication, but as a deeply relational act—one in which the writer’s sense of self directly shapes the story being told. Through hands-on exercises, including transforming random nouns into vivid, imaginative descriptive phrases, participants experienced firsthand how language holds infinite possibilities when wielded with intention and awareness.

In a candid Q&A, Tsundue reflected on his own beginnings — a refugee school, Tinkle comics, and the quiet determination to understand himself through a new language. His journey underscored a powerful truth: that writing can bridge cultures, dissolve anxiety, and become a genuine tool for freedom when approached with honesty and purpose.

The session’s most tangible outcome was a proposal to launch a poetry club at Shoolini University — a dedicated space for students to build creative confidence through regular practice and peer engagement. The initiative signals a broader institutional commitment to nurturing not just skilled writers, but thoughtful, self-aware voices ready to shape both individual and collective narratives.
