Three-day Royal Holloway workshop explored criminal justice, research, and social realities.

The Faculty of Legal Sciences at Shoolini University, in collaboration with Royal Holloway, University of London, concluded a three-day workshop on ‘Criminal Justice System in Practice’. The programme brought together international perspectives and local realities, offering students and researchers an enriched learning experience.

The workshop featured Shailesh Kumar, criminologist, Commonwealth Scholar, and Lecturer in Law at Royal Holloway, University of London. In his inaugural address, Shoolini Chancellor Prof PK Khosla highlighted the value of such collaborations in creating a socially aware and progressive legal education environment.

Prof Nandan Sharma, Associate Dean, Faculty of Legal Sciences, formally launched the workshop, stressing the importance of linking legal theory with social realities. He expressed gratitude to Vice Chancellor Prof Atul Khosla and the senior leadership for their support of the Faculty’s vision.

Across three days, Commonwealth Scholar Shailesh Kumar delivered lectures on themes including ‘Why Do We Punish?, Law and Inequality, and Juvenile Justice’. Drawing on his research into the POCSO Act, criminal justice reforms, and access to justice for marginalised communities, his sessions encouraged participants to think critically about systemic challenges.

An interactive segment saw students analyse theories of punishment through real-life cases, examining both emotional and narrative aspects of justice. Discussions on caste, class, and legal remedies prompted deeper reflection on structural barriers in India’s justice system.

For LLM and PhD scholars, he conducted sessions on research design, academic writing, policy translation, and publishing strategies, along with one-on-one consultations for early-career researchers.

The workshop also included faculty interactions, a visit to the Yogananda Knowledge Centre, and a tree plantation drive.

Convenors Assistant Professor Meghna Thakur and Assistant Professor Palak Sharma said, “We wanted our students to see the law not just as rules, but as a living tool that affects lives. Through this workshop, the Commonwealth Scholar helped us create that lens.”
