Professor SS Chandel, PhD, ranks among the top 2% of researchers in the field of Energy, as per a list released by Stanford University. Impressively, he stands within the top 1.5536465% of the top 100,000 researchers across all fields in the Lifetime Research Career-long Category, covering the period from 1978 to May 6, 2020. Prof Chandel's career began as a Professor and the founding Head of the Centre for Energy & Environmental Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Centre of Excellence in Energy Science and Technology at Shoolini University.
With over four decades of expertise in high-energy physics and renewable energy technologies, Prof Chandel has made significant contributions in several areas. These include solar photovoltaics system design and modelling, solar power generation, solar radiation modelling, photovoltaic (PV) forecasting, and the study of PV degradation. Additionally, his work extends to the development of solar-wind-diesel-biomass-battery-based hybrid systems.
His research is not limited to these areas. Prof Chandel also focuses on passive solar building technologies, passive heating systems, and policy issues related to solar and wind energy. He has conducted comprehensive renewable resource assessments in the Western Himalayan region, utilising Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques.
At present, Prof Chandel is actively involved in the development of passive solar housing technology. His work includes designing and developing PV & Concentrator Photovoltaics (CPV) power generation systems and PV-based hybrid energy systems. He is also pioneering in PV power forecasting using advanced deep learning techniques, alongside his contributions to energy and environmental policy issues.

- Vast administrative experience of working with Central, State Institutions of HP Govt. and Govt. of India, Ministries of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), Science & Technology (Ministry of Science & Technology-DST) and Human Resource Development (MHRD)& National Institute of Solar Energy, Delhi.
- Catalyzed the establishment of scientific & technical research facilities namely Solar Cities Shimla & Hamirpur, National Research & Technology Consortium, Parwanoo, Appropriate Technology Research and Development Centre at Sunder Nagar etc. in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
- Formulated and coordinated 30 International and externally funded Research &Development projects, Consultancy projects out of which 2 projects funded under Australian Aid and World Bank on Passive solar building technology.
- Assessed the Solar PV power generation potential of Himachal Pradesh recently under a consultancy Project for HP Electricity Regulatory Commission (HPERC) by the identifying sites for Megawatt Scale Solar photovoltaic power plants in the 4 districts of Himachal Pradesh which will prove a milestone in the field of Solar power generation in the state.
Catalyzed a number of Policy Initiatives on:

- Solar Water Pumping for irrigation & drinking water supplies
- Policy for making Solar Passive Housing Technology mandatory in Himachal Pradesh making HP as the first state in the country to take such a decision in 1994.-2000,2005.
- Policy for the incorporation of Solar Passive building features in building Byelaws in HP notified by HP Govt. in 2009.
- Policy for the Registration of Geographical Indications (GI) of Himachal Pradesh in 2004.
- Registered Kangra Tea, Kullu Shawl, Chamba Rumal as GIs as the C0-ordinator of HP Patent Information Centre, HP Science, Technology, & Environment Council, Shimla
- Coordinated the established a 500kWp grid connected Solar power plant project to be installed at NIT Hamirpur under MHRD & MNRE, GOI programme which will be upgraded to 1MW capacity. under the National Solar Mission of Govt of India.
