World Heart Day

Shoolini University marked World Heart Day on September 27 with engaging activities to promote heart health. In collaboration with Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), Solan, Shoolini hosted a free Mega Health Camp, offering health check-ups to faculty and students. Nearly 150 participants benefited from the camp, which focused on heart health and provided other essential medical screenings.

General Medicine MD Dr SC Chadha led a team of 15 medical experts at the camp. Among them were, PG Resident Dr Gaurav Talwar, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Hardik Malpani, and Assistant Professor in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Dr Pallavi Kapoor. Ophthalmologist Dr Gian Chand Rajput, along with pharmacist Gulshan and PRO Balwant, supported the event.

In a brief interview, Dr Pallavi Kapoor emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups for women, particularly to detect cancers early. “Women should get regular check-ups every three years, as it can take about 10 years for abnormal cells to develop into disease,” she explained. Dr Kapoor also highlighted a rise in Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) among young women, linking it to unhealthy lifestyles. She encouraged attendees to stay in regular contact with healthcare providers to mitigate health risks.

Dr Gaurav Talwar addressed the alarming rise in cardiovascular diseases, which accounted for 71% of deaths globally. “Cardiovascular diseases involve the heart or blood vessels and claim around 15 million lives annually,” he stated. Dr Talwar identified modifiable risk factors such as poor diet, tobacco use, and obesity, as well as non-modifiable factors like age and family history. He urged everyone to make lifestyle changes, asking them to “Look before you eat, exercise regularly, and stop smoking”. He concluded with a hopeful message, emphasising that heart diseases are often preventable by adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The day also saw various student-led initiatives to raise awareness about heart health. A quiz competition tested students’ knowledge, while a Mythbusters session debunked common misconceptions. Creative activities such as selling heart-shaped bracelets and brownies added a fun touch, drawing in participants. Songs about the heart and inspirational quotes echoed throughout the campus, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

Assistant Professor Kritika Rana conducted a sustainable candle-making workshop, where students learned to craft heart-shaped candles, blending creativity with environmental consciousness.

Sustainability and Community Engagement Director Poonam Nanda said, “We wanted to raise awareness through informative and enjoyable activities to encourage maximum student participation.”
