Shoolini DENESFA
Pro Chancellor Vishal Anand proposed plan to aid farmers and involve women actively

Farmers from the Western Himalayan region gathered at Shoolini University to explore innovative ways to boost their livelihoods. The event, organised in collaboration with Hungarian non-profit organisation DENESFA, focused on sustainable agriculture and rural empowerment under the initiative, ‘Social Empowerment and Sustainability of Rural Population in the Western Himalayan Region’.

The meeting saw active participation from farmers representing different villages, who shared their challenges and ideas for progress. Pro Chancellor Vishal Anand, DENESFA founder Jay, and Dean of the MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture, Prof Somesh Sharma led the discussions. He was joined by faculty members and researchers. The session began with a warm welcome by Assistant Professor Devanshi Pandit, setting an inclusive and engaging tone for the day.

One of the main highlights was the proposal for a dairy cooperative to strengthen the region’s agricultural economy. Vishal Anand presented a detailed plan to provide farmers with vital resources, enhance milk quality, and empower women through active participation. Farmers raised pertinent questions about cattle feed and quality assessment, which the experts addressed with practical solutions.

Prof Somesh Sharma delved into key challenges such as market access, high costs of raw materials for mushroom production, and pest-related crop losses. The discussions were not just theoretical—farmers actively contributed, turning the session into a platform for real-time problem-solving.

The event also included a hands-on tour of Shoolini University’s advanced facilities. At the food processing lab, farmers learned methods to reduce wastage and increase the value of their produce. The MS Swaminathan School of Agriculture visit featured the Crop Cafeteria, where farmers saw exotic vegetables with high-profit potential.

The mushroom cultivation unit was another major attraction. Farmers showed great interest in the Pleurotus species and were thrilled to receive freshly harvested mushrooms. At the milk processing plant, they observed techniques to extend shelf life and improve profitability.

The event ended on a high note, with farmers expressing appreciation for the university’s initiatives. They showed enthusiasm for future collaborations, viewing the event as a turning point for sustainable growth and economic progress in their communities.

This initiative reinforced Shoolini University’s commitment to driving meaningful change in rural Himalayan regions through innovation, education, and collaboration.
