National Himalayan Science & Technology Conference (HiSTCon 2023) at Shoolini University.
Shoolini University, known for its commitment to environmental conservation, has taken a significant step towards preserving and promoting the majestic Himalayas. At the two-day groundbreaking National Himalayan Science & Technology Conference (HiSTCon 2023), eminent scientists, academicians, students, and entrepreneurs got together at Shoolini University. The conference aimed to address the growing ecological fragility of the Himalayan region and explore scientific and technological solutions for sustainable development.
Inaugurated by chief guest Prof VP Kamboj, former director of CSIR-CDRI, HiSTCon 2023 focused on fostering economic development, promoting tourism, and enhancing public relations in the Himalayas.
A key objective, as highlighted by Prof Atul Khosla, the Vice Chancellor of Shoolini University, was to initiate a conversation among scientific and intellectual minds while engaging the public for the development of the Himalayan region. To facilitate this, the university launched the Himalayan Forum for Science and Technology Communication, led by former Panjab University Vice Chancellor Prof RC Sobti.
During the conference, various distinguished speakers shared their expertise and research findings. Prof Kamboj delivered a keynote speech on ‘Indian Vaccines for Global Health’, highlighting India's contribution to global healthcare. Prof Alok Dhawan presented his research on solutions for potable water and the significance of nanomaterial toxicology. Prof Dulal Panda discussed a novel approach to cancer chemotherapy using spine poisons, addressing the rising number of cancer cases in India. Prof Sundriyal shed light on the casualties and environmental impact of floods in Uttarakhand, attributing them primarily to human-induced changes. Prof SS Kanwar shared his research on the applications of lipopeptides, emphasising their potential as antimicrobial and anticancer agents, as well as in obesity management.
In addition to the enlightening lectures, research scholars had the opportunity to present their work through oral presentations and posters, which were evaluated by esteemed dignitaries at different locations on the campus. To celebrate the heritage of the region, Shoolini University served the traditional Himachali Dham, a delectable culinary experience that honoured the cultural richness of the state.
The second day of the conference delved deeper into key themes, including Healthcare & Health Systems, Food & Zero Hunger, HIMVIRSA, Climate Crisis, Biodiversity & Conservation, and Science for Farmers & Tribals. Eminent speakers from renowned universities shared their insights on various topics. Prof BD Joshi discussed hydropower projects and riverine ecosystems in Uttarakhand, while Dr Rajesh Jaryal addressed the importance of temple waste management. Prof Ghazal Fatima explored the connection between circadian rhythm and diseases, and Dr Yogesh Chawla, a hepatologist and Padma Shri awardee delivered a thought-provoking talk to the audience.
The conference concluded with a valedictory session, with prizes for the best oral presentations and posters. Prof Sunil Puri, Shoolini University's chief advisor, expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and announced the upcoming International Conference on Biodiversity, scheduled to be held from September 26 to 28 at Shoolini University.
By orchestrating HiSTCon 2023, Shoolini University has taken a significant stride towards ensuring a thriving future for the region. The conference showcased the university's leadership in addressing ecological challenges in the Himalayas.
