
HFRI and Shoolini University have signed an MoU for research and education.

Himalayan Forest Research Institute (HFRI), Shimla, and Shoolini University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for research and education.
The MoU between the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) - HFRI and Shoolini University marks a significant milestone in quality research, environmental conservation, and skilled human resource development. Both institutions aim to address critical challenges in biodiversity assessment, climate change, skill development, biotechnology, health, and wellness in the Himalayan region.
The Himalayan Forest Research Institute, a Regional Research Institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, is renowned for its groundbreaking work in forestry research and education. Its mandate includes diverse areas such as conservation, agroforestry, medicinal plants, and eco-restoration, making it an invaluable asset for the region’s ecological well-being.
The MoU will be a collaborative effort between the two organisations. It envisions a future of cutting-edge research, student and faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and more. The ultimate goal is positively impacting society and promoting economic development through sustainable practices in the Himalayan region.
Key areas of cooperation between ICFRE - HFRI and Shoolini University will be collaborative efforts regarding information and experience. Regular joint meetings will facilitate the exchange of experiences in education and syllabus development, fostering an atmosphere of shared learning.
Further, both institutions will explore opportunities for faculty and student exchanges, enabling access to diverse perspectives and knowledge. The institutions will work towards creating a sustainable funding model by tapping into various sources, including local governments, international funding agencies, industries, and alumni support. Collaborative research findings and community engagement projects will be shared with proper acknowledgement to the individuals involved at both institutions, contributing to the broader body of knowledge.
HFRI Shimla Director Sandeep Sharma said the world-class labs at Shoolini University will facilitate groundbreaking research. The cutting-edge facilities at Shoolini University will enhance the fieldwork conducted by HFRI scientists.
Shoolini University Chancellor Prof PK Khosla said, “Our joint efforts will pave the way for groundbreaking research and sustainable solutions, fostering a brighter future for the Himalayan region.” He also announced that shoolini University would soon start forestry research and education programmes on the campus.
Prof Khosla was the driving force behind establishing the Forestry Department at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Nauni, in 1975. This department continues to thrive and flourish today.
