Lokender Kumar is an Associate Professor and Academic Incharge at the School of Biotechnology. Before joining Shoolini, he was a Research Assistant Professor (Postdoc) at the Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics Laboratory, as well as the Single Molecule Biophysics Laboratory in the Department of Physics at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado, USA, from 2016 to 2022.
Asst Prof Kumar earned his PhD in Microbiology from Panjab University and a Master of Science in Microbiology, with a Gold Medal from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Recognised for his strong academics, he is a recipient of the DST-Inspire Fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and has secured a CSIR-UGC junior research fellowship.
Specialising in Human-Microbe interactions, Asst Prof Kumar's research focuses on cellular signalling processes and the impact of microorganisms on host cells. His expertise spans diverse areas, including bacterial communication (quorum sensing), antibiotic-resistant biofilms in human food, and the medicinal potential of plants from the Western Himalayas. He also explores innovative strategies using bacteriophages to combat bacterial infections and investigates the crucial role of gut microbes in human health.
In the academic realm, Asst Prof Kumar teaches the Foundation of Data Science in biotechnology and microbiology. Leveraging his multidisciplinary training, he integrates advanced data science tools into his teaching methods, providing students with cutting-edge insights.
Asst Prof Kumar is dedicated to improving research in microbiology and biotechnology. He leads a project supported by Divyasampark iHUB Devices, Materials and Technology Foundation at IIT Roorkee, and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Indian government. This project is dedicated to developing a cost-effective automatic device for detecting and quantifying antimicrobial activity, showcasing his dedication to practical applications of research.
