Anuj Chauhan and Shashi of Engineering Department have brought laurels for the University by winning the third prize in Start Up India.

Their project on a solar dryer system model, which they had developed under the mentorship of Mr Adit Rana, came in for much appreciation

Asked how they came across the idea for a cost effective and efficient solar dryer system for agricultural products, Shashi said that he belongs to Mandi and he had noticed that there was no proper way to dey vegetables and fruits quickly, especially during the winters.

He said the “drying process

takes a lot of time and using electric appliances ruins the quality of

the food. So, using solar energy was the most efficient and cheap idea”.

Anuj said that the total expenditure on this project came to just about Rs 25,000.

He said the solar dryer works with the help of a blower and  the hot air passes through a box like structure where there is sufficient space to keep the stuff.

Aluminium chips and tubes are placed under solar panels which allow the panels to heat up fast.

The most interesting part is that the aluminum and metal used in making the

dryer is waste factory product.

The two inventors disclosed that the model gave 15-16 per cent more

efficiency than expected. They expressed the hope that the solar dryer will

soon be brought up in the market at the same cost they made it for, that is, Rs 25,000.

The two also won a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and incubation offers from the Himachal Pradesh Government.

They said It was tough to compete with so many teams but they got through all of it because of everyone’s support specially our own Shoolini faculty
