Faculty of Applied Sciences and Biotechnology has two Schools, viz, School of Biotechnology and School of Bioengineering, Food Technology and Agriculture. Both the Schools are inter-dependent for academics and research. The vision of the Schools is to develop technically qualified, skilled, competent human resource through excellent teaching and hands-on training to cater the needs of Biotech and Food Industries. Since 2012, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Biotechnology has been ranked 2nd among the private biotechnology institutions of India by BioSpectrum survey. The University was also acknowledged for its excellent research in Biotechnology Sciences by CCI and Gujarat Technological University. The Schools have well qualified and learned faculty having done their Ph.D and post doc from various institutions in USA and Europe, emphasizing on quality teaching and research.
The outcome driven curriculum and course delivery through innovative teaching and learning methods including online learning system (e-Univ) are followed. As a value addition to the education, SPRINT program has been adopted for skill and personality development of the students. The curricula are designed and revised in consultation with industry as per the growing demand of research and corporate. Our MSc programs start with research orientation from the first semester itself. The University is having MoU with Gachon University, South Korea for exchange program at UG and PG level. Under this program, students pursue one semester of their UG/PG program in the foreign Universities.
Aligned with University research thrust areas, the research focus of the schools is to harness Himalayan biodiversity. The key areas of research include drug discovery, microbial diversity and enzyme technology, agricultural research, conservation of Himalayan biodiversity, food fermentation, fortified food development, and nutrition science, etiology of human diseases, and diagnostics, including biosensor technology. Within a short span of five years, the Schools have produced about 30 Ph.Ds in Biotechnology and Microbiology and generated research grants worth rupees 6.5 crores from DST, DBT, DRDO and ICMR, and MoFPI. More than 100 research papers have been published in the journals of national and international repute with highest impact factor of 15 and average h-index of 5. The School has filed eight patents in translational research of international importance.
Job placements and career prospects: We have included CSIR /UGC –NET and GATE syllabi in our course curricula, so that students qualify such national level competitive examinations. Our students are able to get number of prestigious fellowships like UGC/ARS-NET, GATE, INSPIRE, Rajiv Gandhi and Maulana Azad fellowships for pursuing research. More than 80 % of our students have been placed in highly reputed companies like Dabur, Nestle India, Cremica, Nutrahelix, Panacea Biotech, GenAxy, Agilent technologies, Wockhardt, Abbott, HiMedia Labs etc. with minimum average salary package of Rs. 2.5 lac per anum.
