New School of Bioengineering and Food Technology at Shoolini University |
|
“Shoolini University has taken a lead in setting up a distinct School of Bioengineering and Food Technology for imparting quality education in fast emerging sciences of biotechnology, food technology and bioinformatics for the benefit of Himachal students,” revealed Prof PK Khosla, Vice Chancellor, Shoolini University here today. This school has been set up been set up for giving thrust to bioengineering and food technology courses in view of their importance in present day scenario of liberalization and rapid globalization.
Earlier these courses were running under the School of Engineering but In order to strengthen ‘biology based technology’ programs we have now established a separated School of Bioengineering under the faculty of Biotechnology, in which a medical as well as a non-medical students can pursue B.tech (Biotechnology) B.tech (Food technology) and B.Tech (Bioinformatics) programs.
It is generally perceived that after 10+2 only non-medical students can become engineers. This opinion however holds no more truth with the introduction of neo-generation discipline of biotechnology and related fields. Students with biology background can also become engineer by perusing B tech in Bio engineering courses. “The credit hours for the remedial course in Maths for medical students and is presently 3 hours per week for one semester likewise a similar load in biology for non-medical students however in order to make the students competent enough in their basic subjects we have increased the credit hours upto 8 per week for two semesters,” said Dr Khosla.
"Bioengineering is emerging as a new discipline and twenty first century is designated as the century of biotechnology bringing immense benefits to our society by way of new drugs for treatment of chronic and other diseases, new nutritious food products, and tackling various environmental problems including climate change”, said Prof PK Khosla.
Bio-based industry in our country is on the threshold of becoming one of the biggest earners with vast opportunities for exporting bio products. This industry shall provide very lucrative jobs for engineers and scientists who have been trained in various branches of biotechnology and food technology. By starting a distinct School of Bioengineering and Food Technology, Shoolini University shall be able to train students from rural and semi urban areas of Himachal Pradesh for tremendous job opportunities in bio-based industry not only in Himachal Pradesh and the country, but also abroad.
