Shoolini University celebrated “Fascination of plants day”
Aiming at creating awareness among the people about the environment, first international “Fascination of plants day” was celebrated in Shoolini University today. Organized by the School of Bioengineering and Food Technology, this program has been launched under the umbrella of the ‘European plant science organization (EPSO)’ in 40 countries around the globe, the main aim of this program is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture, in sustainably producing food as well as for horticulture, forestry and all of the non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals.
According to Dr Dinesh Chatanta, Coordinator, through this coordinated activity we want to germinate the seed in the collective mind of people that plant science is of critical significance to the social and environmental landscape. Around 40 countries around the globe are running this campaign and in India, Shoolini University is among six institutions including Jawahar Lal Nehru University who are organizing this sort of program.
Around 60 students from different government schools of Solan participated in different competitions including model making, painting, poster presentation as well as paper presentation. In junior wing of model making competition Riya, tanvi, Akash and Vipul bagged first position where as in senior section Ajay Thakur from Shoolini University bagged first position. In painting competition Divanshi from Geeta Adarsh Vidyalaya bagged first position whereas Arushi Tomar from Shoolini University bagged first position. In poster making competition Geeta Adarsh Vidyalaya came first where as in senior section Ajay bagged first position.
Guest lecturer Dr Duni Chand from the department of Biotechnology, HP University also addressed the students.
“Plants are fascinating, from one little seed, planted into soil many green lives can arise from small herbs up to big trees, or from ornamental flowers to substantial crops which all animals and mankind need to survive on this planet. Therefore there is a dire need to preserve our enviorment” said Dr SK Srivastava, Deputy director, Ministry of Enviorment and Forest, Govt. of India, Botanical Survey of India, Dehradun, who was the chief guest of the function.
During the program a society named ‘Society of Bio and food technocrats’ launched as well as a product called ‘tubo-plant’ was also launched by the tissue culture unit of Shoolini University’s School of Biotechnology.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Shoolini University Dr PK Khosla, “from a small little seed planted into soil, many green lives can arise, from small herb up to big trees or from ornamental flower to substantial crops which all animals and mankind need to survive on this planet therefore we should come forward to preserve our environment and contribute as much as we can”.
